Probationary Officer(PO) is a managerial level post and a very lucrative post among the bank aspirants. Every year lakhs of candidates appear for IBPS PO Exam and the competition is getting tougher day by day. Every year Government and Private Banks conduct their separate recruitment drive for the post of Probationary Officer(PO/MT) through Post Graduate Diploma in Banking and Finance Program(PGDBF). With PGDBF, candidates are enrolled for 9 months exhaustive curriculum of PG Diploma program following 3 months of On-job training and then they get an appointment as an Assistant Manager in the bank.

PO is the official post of Probationary Officer in Banks, IBPS PO work profile holds the designation of an Assistant Manager on Probation. This is the starting level and candidate kept for a probation period of at least 02 years after clearing IBPS PO exam. After clearing the IBPS PO Common Written Examination (CWE) and Interview candidate will be appointed as an Assistant manager or Junior Management Grade-1 (JMG-Scale 1) Officer and he often called as Scale 1 Officer.

Initial Posting of Probationary Officer(PO)

When candidate get selected as a Probationary Officer, they will go through Induction training program in Management Training Academies of the banks for 10 to 20 days. This duration of training varies from bank to bank, and after completion of this Induction training in Management Training Academies candidate posted as a PO anywhere in India. Candidates can be posted as Asst. Manager on probation in different branches or Head Office or Corporate Office or Zonal Offices or in specialized branches like microstate branches, treasury Branches etc. as per placement policy of particular banks.

Duration of Probation Period

Generally, IBPS PO Participation Banks scheduled probation period of two years. In this period candidate understand the practical way and structure of the bank. Probation Period of Probationary Officer(PO) divided into various phases according to the bank. During probation period candidate handle, different types of banking work like customer service, Accounts related queries, clearing, cash handling, loans, internet banking and more. And once the probation period is over candidate will appoint as an Assistant Manager or Manager and get permanent work after satisfied verification report by local police department.

Probationary Officer Role and Responsibilities

Job Profile of Probationary Officer in Bank or work of Probationary Officer(PO) is a multitasking in nature during first two years. PO has to work in various departments like Loans & Advances, Deposits, Clearing, Fixed Deposits, Pensions, ATM, Payment and Cheque clearances, Credit Cards, Report Making, Account related queries like closure, statement, Issues of ATM etc.

Customer Service

First, job responsibility of Probationary Officer is to handle customers of the banks and provide them with a solution for their queries. It can be related to any banking service like account statement, forms and issuing checkbooks, the opening of new accounts, complaints like discrepancies in accounts, rectification of undue charges. Bank PO will also handle many works on a daily basis like cash deposits, and withdrawal, etc.

Cash Handling

Cash Handling is basically applicable for Bank clerk but in some conditions like overburden of work, PO has to handle cash transactions. During heavy rush in branch PO's also manage all types of deposits and cash withdrawal. This is the reason, PO's trained with the transaction software of bank. PO's also assigned to handle cash in ATMs to the selected locations but this is a temporary work in PO job profile.

Payment Clearance

After clerk, this is PO responsibility to manage all clearance system of payments for Inward and Outward clearing. Cheque clearance by fetching actual data of client also done by PO as per requirement. And sometimes PO's also assign to process all type of transaction like Demand Draft(DD), NEFT, RTGS, Cheques and other payment methods.

Loan Processing

In initial stages of the probation period, most of the banks assigned freshers to their loan and Insurance Department to sell their product. For this department train them for How to sell the product, what to sell and how to convince the customers by giving complete knowledge about the product.

Generate New Business

This is another responsibility of IBPS Bank Job Profile where they have to manage various activities such as the promotion of banking products, New Account opening, selling Insurance, loans, etc. but this feature purely depends on bank policies. Some of the public sector banks do not have marketing and sales executive to perform this job, in that case, it is PO responsibility to enhance the business of the bank.

ATM Related Queries

The probationary officer also assigned for ATM-based queries like how to block ATM card online, new ATM Request, ATM pin no. not received, or machine did not dispatch cash but deducted from the customer account and similar issues.

Reporting and Verification

Daily Reporting works of transactions and account related also assigned to the Probationary Officer and if required PO manually verify each transaction and records of accounts on daily basis.

IBPS PO Salary Structure 2017-18

Well, starting salary of Bank probationary officer is same in Public Sector Banks i.e Rs.23,700/- as from 1st June 2015 onward. IBPS PO also receives an annual increment of Rs.980, which is paid up to the seventh year.

Dearness Allowance in Banks is revised on a quarterly basis i.e in the months of February, May, August, and November. DA is based on the Consumer Price Index(CPI) as declared by Government of India and DA goes up with the Inflation and comes down if the inflation rate is in negative.Revised DA is 39.40% of Basic Pay. Special Allowance has been added in 10th BPS(wef 01/11/2012) and for scale 1 is 7.75% on which Dearness Allowance is also payable. House Rent Allowance(HRA) depends on where the candidate has been posted and it can be either 9.0%, 8.0% or 7.0%. City Compensatory Allowance(CCA) depends on place of posting and can be either 4% (max. Rs. 870/-) or 3%(max. Rs. 600/-)
