Notification of IBPS PO 2017 is already out, Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) scheduled Common Written Examination (CWE) for PO in the month of October.

Candidates who have successfully filled their IBPS PO online Application Form, now they need to focus on preparation of PO Common written exam (CWE) Prelims and Mains. Because those who qualify in Prelims and Mains "IBPS PO CWE" shortlisted for next round i.e Interview.

Before starting the preparation for IBPS PO Exam, a candidate should know about the Syllabus of IBPS PO 2017 Exam and the new pattern of ibps po exam 2017.


IBPS PO 2017 Syllabus always remains the same, only the questions based on those topics are molded in a different way.

IBPS conducts PO Recruitment in two levels, Tier 1 and Tier 2. Tier 1 is the pre-exam and Tier 2 is the Mains Exam. Preliminary Exam contains quick and multi-decision less target sort questions with shorter time.

As per notification, there are no changes in the prelims exam pattern this year and the exam is expected to be on the similar lines as IBPS PO Prelims Exam 2016

Duration of IBPS PO 2017 Main Exam is 3 Hours

IBPS PO Mains Exam is the second level in IBPS PO Recruitment and exam pattern is structured in such a way that every subject needs to be attempted in a proper series within their respective allotted time duration. This year IBPS will also conduct a descriptive test of English Language includes Letter and Essay Writing along with the mains exam.

IBPS PO CWE Syllabus 2017 - Prelims and Mains (Topic Wise) - In Detail


IBPS PO 2017 Reasoning Syllabus 


Reasoning Ability Section includes verbal and non-verbal category questions. Verbal Category questions contain blood relation, sitting arrangement, coding-decoding, making series and syllogism questions. And non-verbal category questions includes series/analogy and classification. 

Seating arrangement questions asked in the form of Linear, Square or circular, Puzzles(Scheduling, Floor-based etc). 1-2 variable based questions are expected in prelims exam. But in mains exam questions will be much more complicated with multiple parameters.
In prelims Exam, the expected number of sitting arrangement questions is 15 in 3 sets. And in the Mains exams, this number may go up to 4-5 sets.

Inequality questions come in direct or coded form and the level of these questions will be easy to moderate. In the preliminary exam, 5 questions from inequality topic is expected and this topic is less likely to be asked in the Mains Exam

Syllogism, the pattern of syllogism questions has changed and now questions are now asked on Reverse Syllogism. This category is most likely to be asked in the Mains Exam. Expected number of questions in the preliminary exam is 4 to 5 direct questions and questions based on reverse syllogism may be asked in the mains exam.

Coding-Decoding, like syllogism the pattern of coding-decoding has also changed. And questions from this topic may be based on simple word coding, sentence coding or new pattern based coding questions. 3 to 4 questions from word or sentence coding asked in Prelims exam and new pattern based coding questions are more likely to be asked in the mains exam.

Input-Output, questions may be based on single or double shifting, or in combination with arithmetic operations. Questions from input-output topic will not be asked in the Preliminary exam and 5 questions are expected to be asked in Mains Exam

Data Sufficiency, this type of questions is based on 2 or 3 statements and the level of these questions would be moderate. Expected number of questions from data sufficiency is 5-7 questions in the Mains exam and data Sufficiency questions will not be asked in the prelims exam.

Logical Reasoning, questions from this topic may be asked from several topics like- Statement and conclusion/ argument/ course of action, Cause and Effect, theme-based etc. Approximately 10 questions from this topic in the Mains exam and questions from this topic will not be asked in the Prelims phase. IBPS PO 2017 English Syllabus


English Language is the first paper of basic English knowledge. It has General English, Comprehension & Spelling sections which given below. General English includes Vocabulary, Synonyms, Antonyms, Word formation and Sentence rearrangement. Comprehension has Theme detection, Deriving conclusions, Passage completion, Error detection, and Passage Correction, Sentence correction. Spelling section includes Grammar, Idioms, and Phrases questions.

Reading Comprehension topic questions will be based mostly on Economy or related field. Questions from Synonyms/ Antonyms under reading comprehension may not be asked in the Mains phase. Candidates are advised to read Economic Times/ The Hindu/ The Indian Express for the preparation of Reading comprehension topic. Expected number of questions from this topic is 1 set with 7-10 questions in the Prelims exam. And in the Mains exam, 2 Reading Comprehension sets are expected to be asked with a total of approximately 10-15 questions.

Cloze test, questions from Cloze test may be asked based on the old or new pattern and level of these questions would be moderate. Expected number of questions is 8-10 questions in the Prelims exam. And this topic is less likely to be asked in the Mains phase.

Spotting Errors, this topic has seen some major changes over the past year. New pattern based error spotting questions comes in the Mains exam. From this topic, 5-10 questions are expected to be asked in the Prelims exam and 5 questions based on the new pattern in the Mains exam.

Para Jumbles, questions from para jumbles may be asked based on the old or new pattern. From this topic. 5 questions based on the old pattern is expected in the Prelims exam. New pattern-based questions may be asked in the Mains exam. 

Sentence Correction, in these type of questions errors, asked in a single or multiple parts of a sentence. Level of these questions is expected to be moderate to difficult. Expected number of questions asked from this topic is 5 questions in the prelims exam. Questions with errors in multiple parts of the sentence may be asked in the Mains phase. 

Fill in the blanks, questions from this topic may be double or triple filler based. There is another variation of this type of questions where you may be asked to identify one single word that would aptly fill 2 different sentences. Around 5 questions from this topic may be asked in the Prelims or Mains exam. 

Sentence/ Paragraph Completion, from this topic questions, are usually asked in the Mains phase. The overall level of these questions may be moderate to difficult. Around 5 questions from this topic are expected to be asked in the Mains exam.

Sentence Connectors, this is the fairly new topic introduced last year in PO Exam. The level of these questions may be moderate to difficult, depending on how well you understand this topic. Around 5 questions may be asked from this topic in the Mains exam and this topic is less likely to be asked in the Mains phase.

IBPS PO 2017 Quantitative Aptitude Syllabus 


IBPS PO Exam papers contain various topics and to score good candidates should practice for all of them. Major topics covered in Data Analysis and Interpretation are the Number system, HCF & LCM, Number series, Problems based on numbers. Approximation Wrong Number, Decimal Fractions, Square root and cube root, Simplifications. Partnerships, Percentage, Ratio, and proportions, Average & Ages Ratio & Proportion, Profit and Loss, Simple Interest and compound interest, Time and Work, Time and Distance, Average, Mensuration. Permutation and combination, Data tables, Probability, Pie Charts, Bar Graphs, Line Graphs, Mixed graphs, Case study. Candidates should try some practice test and Mock test for better understand the paper pattern.

Number Series, questions from this topic may be based on various patterns like double step variation, arithmetic (difference/ multiplication/ division) based, square/ cube/ square root/ cube root based, mixed arithmetic operations based etc. 5 Questions are expected to be asked in the Prelims exam. Questions from this topic are less likely to be asked in Mains phase.

Simplification/ Approximation questions based on basic BODMAS rules, percentages etc. In Prelims exam, 5 questions are expected to be asked from this topic in Prelims exam. Question from simplification/Approximation is less likely to be asked in Mains phase.

Quadratic Equations, questions are expected to be mostly factorization based and less of formula based. Level of questions from this topic is moderate. From the quadratic equations, the expected number of questions to be asked are 5 questions in the prelims exam and will not be asked in Mains exam. 

Data Interpretation, questions will be asked from topics like Line graph, Bar graph, Pie Chart, Radar Chart, Mixed charts, Tabular charts, Caselet charts and Missing DI. Questions in the Mains phase from data interpretation will be difficult and may be asked in combination with arithmetic problems. In Prelims phase, questions will be comparatively easy but calculative than mains exam. In prelims exam, 2-3 sets are expected i.e. 10-15 questions of DI questions. For the Mains phase, 4-5 sets of DI questions which will be difficult as well as calculative. 

Miscellaneous Problems involve questions like- Ratio & Proportion, Averages, Age-based problems, Percentages, Profit Loss & Discount, Mixture & Allegations, Simple & Compound Interest, Time Work & Wages, Speed Time & Distance, Boats & Streams, Probability etc. Level of questions is expected to be moderate and calculative. Expect 10 questions from the topics mentioned in the prelims phase. And less likely to be asked in Mains phase individually or may be asked in combination with DI sets in this exam. 

Data Sufficiency, this topic will be asked in mains exam in the form of 3 statements. 5 questions are expected to be asked in the Mains exam. 

Quantity based questions, this topic is introduced in PO exam last year. Questions from this topic will be calculative and asked in Mains phase of the exam. Expected 5 questions from this topic in the Mains exam.

Questions from computer aptitude may be conversion or flowchart based. Computer Syllabus of IBPS PO Exam covers:

  • Basic computer terminology
  • Software & Hardware questions 
  • Computer Basic Topics
  • Computer abbreviation
  • DataBase Management System (DBMS)
  • Microsoft-office
  • Basic knowledge of Internet use, etc. 

Computer Aptitude 5 questions may be asked in the Mains exam and questions from Computer Aptitude will not be asked in the prelims phase.

IBPS PO  2017 Descriptive Test Syllabus


Descriptive Test section will have 2 questions in IBPS Mains Exam i.e 1 essay and 1 letter will be asked in this section. For the preparation of this section, candidates should practice writing essays on current topics preferably on a computer. And for Letter writing both formal and informal letters should be practiced. 

IBPS PO Prelims Exam is of qualifying nature and marks obtained in the preliminary exam will not be counted in Interview. Marks obtained in mains examination only will be counted for interview call. Final merit list will be made on the basis of total marks obtained in IBPS PO Mains exam & Interview. And there will be negative marking of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer in prelims & mains.
